When we began to plan our short film, we really wanted to focus on one character's story and a problem that they encounter, and create a sense of mystery. We chose to base our story upon the idea of waking up in an unknown location, alone and confused. This was an interesting starting point and gave us a lot of flexibility when scripting the events that lead to such an occurrence.
Once our script was complete we planned the locations and dates for our shooting. Nearby to college there's a field that has interesting features in the background that adds depth to the frame. Furthermore it was a good location as it had a lot of long grass, bushes and trees - which we took advantage of in our filming.
There were a few problems minor problems we had to face. Because we were filming in a public area we encountered many members of the public, particulalry dog walkers, we overcame this by simply pausing and reshooting some interupted scenes. As well as members of the public, we also clashed with another group who had chosen to shoot in the same location as us, but this proved not to be too much of a problem as we simply respected each others space and filmed in different areas of the field.
The shooting went rather smoothly however it did take a few days to collect all of our desired shots. We followed script to ensure that we had everything we needed to portray the story effectively. It was satisfying to see our vision become reality and I was happy with the shots that we ended up with.
During editing we pieced together necessary clips to achieve the storyline we had written, and eventually added background music and even cut the clips to the beat of the main track that ran throughout the short film. We used fade in and fade out transitions to show a flashback/forward in time, as well as colour correction and speed alterations to produce an effective and precise look to the film.
We knew that music would have a strong impact on the overall, especially as there was little dialogue and one character on screen. The premise of the party scenes was that although the film is set in modern day, the character went to a 90's themed night out, and so I used my personal knowledge and experience of these events to select top dance tracks from this time period, I also consulted my Dad who experienced the 90's himself and had a continued interest in the genre. For the field scenes we selected a Radiohead song, I was inspired by Baz Luhrmann's 'Romeo + Juliet' (1996), where the song was featured in a scene that had a similar ambiguous tone to the one I was hoping to achieve. I used the instrumental version and I think it fit perfectly with the storyline of the feature.
To conclude, I believe that we created an effective film that has a clear and interesting narration. I personally was pleased with the use of editing editing to narrate the plot and we achieved an effective flow throughout.
The film was well received by audiences, and was commended by my film teacher, friends and family, and viewers on YouTube.
